A music theory game for curious beginners

Music theory game: play with sound before rules

Music theory can wait. Start with the fun bit: place a doodle, hear it loop, then change one piece and see what happens. The useful words for musical patterns make more sense after you have played with the pattern itself.

Play high and low like a vertical slide.

On a visual music canvas, height makes sound visible. Put one mark near the bottom and another near the top, then compare them. You do not need to name the gap to enjoy the jump; the name can come later if you want it.

Make a loop that bounces the way you want.

A loop gets its personality from when things happen. Pack marks together for a busy tumble, or leave clear space for a slower bounce. Repetition feels good; a surprise makes you want to hit Play once more.

  • Tempo is how fast the loop runs.
  • A beat is a steady place for a mark to land.
  • A rest is the quiet gap that makes the next sound land better.

Choose a sound world, then doodle inside it.

A scale is simply the set of sounds the playground offers at once. It keeps the doodle feeling connected while you experiment freely. Changing it changes the color of the game, not whether you are doing it correctly.

Ready to hear it?

Open the playground, make one mark, and see what silly or surprising loop appears next.
